5 Essential Mixing Techniques for Electronic Music Producers

In my world of electronic music production, the mix can make or break a track. A professionally mixed electronic track has clarity, depth, punch, and that elusive “glue” that makes it sound cohesive on any playback system. As a producer with over 30 years of experience working with platinum-selling artists and chart-topping tracks, I want to share five essential mixing techniques that have transformed my music and can do the same for yours.

1. Creating Space Through Frequency Carving

One of the most common issues I see in amateur electronic productions is frequency masking—where elements compete for the same frequency range, resulting in a muddy, unclear mix.

How I implement it:

• I use an EQ with a spectrum analyzer to identify which elements occupy the same frequency ranges
• For each competing element, I determine which frequencies are essential to its character
• I carve out space by cutting non-essential frequencies from one sound to make room for another
• I focus particularly on the low-mid range (200-500Hz), which tends to get congested quickly

It’s not about how good each element sounds in isolation, but how well they work together. Sometimes a sound that seems thin on its own sits perfectly in a mix.

2. Dynamic Control Beyond Basic Compression

While basic compression is fundamental, truly professional electronic music utilizes multi-band compression, parallel compression, and sidechain techniques creatively.

Key techniques I use:

• Multiband compression to control different frequency ranges independently
• Parallel compression to drums for punch without sacrificing transients
• Creative sidechaining beyond the classic “ducking” effect—sometimes sidechaining only specific frequency bands
• Volume automation instead of compression when I need precise dynamic control

For instance, I often set up a send with a heavily compressed version of my drums, then blend it in subtly with the original. This creates thickness and sustain without destroying the transients.

3. Spatial Positioning Using Delay Instead of Reverb

Many producers overuse reverb, which can quickly lead to a washed-out, distant mix. Instead:

• I use pre-delay on my reverb (80-120ms) to maintain clarity
• I consider short, mono delays panned left and right instead of reverb for certain elements
• I create “reverb” effects using multiple staggered delays with different feedback settings
• I reserve true reverb for creating depth rather than width

This approach provides spatial impression while maintaining the directness and impact essential in electronic music.

4. Precision Bus Processing for Genre-Specific Sound

Different electronic genres have specific sonic characteristics. Bus processing is my secret to achieving these signature sounds:

• For house and techno: I use subtle saturation and compression on the drum bus to glue elements together
• For EDM and festival tracks: I apply multiband compression on the master to achieve that “wall of sound”
• For ambient and downtempo: I use parallel processing with heavy reverbs and delays on an aux channel

By processing groups of sounds together rather than only individual channels, I create cohesion and the specific vibe required for each genre.

5. Strategic Automation for Energy Flow

The most engaging electronic tracks evolve constantly. Manual automation is the key to creating this evolution:

• I automate filter cutoffs to build tension before drops
• I create subtle volume rides for lead elements to emphasize important phrases
• I automate effect sends to increase complexity during specific sections
• I use automation to control the stereo width throughout the track

Even small automation moves (1-2dB changes) can dramatically improve the perceived energy and flow of a track.
